Why add the Charles Barber's Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Medal NGC GEM Proof to your collection?
This Charles Barber Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Proof Medal was graded at the GEM Proof level by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). It was minted by the Shanghai Mint through a special arrangement with the Smithsonian and ModernCoinMart. The medal was struck to proof quality on a 1 oz., .9999 pure silver planchet. The background of this issue is fascinating. Szechuan Province in China needed to mint some new coinage around the turn of the 20th century. They bought coin presses from a New Jersey company and contracted for U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber to create dies. Few pattern coins were struck with the original dies. These examples are now on display, on loan to the Smithsonian while a separate set resides at the Shanghai Mint Museum. The facility flooded and subsequently damaged the presses and dies. The dies were irreparably damaged. This medal is an authorized reproduction of the Barber issue and was struck at the Shanghai Mint.
Barber's Classic Dragon
The obverse image is the iconic Chinese Dragon, as engraved by Charles Barber based on the classic Chinese Kwangtung dollar. The reverse Chinese writing includes the year and denomination.
Magnificent GEM Proof
GEM Proof examples are produced using a specialized process involving polished dies and planchets. They would grade at PF65 or higher on the Sheldon Scale.
