Why add the Charles Barber's Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Medal GEM BU to your collection?
This Charles Barber Dragon Pattern 1 oz. Silver Medal is available to add to your collection in the GEM BU grade. It was minted by the Shanghai Mint through the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution for ModernCoinMart. The medal was struck on a 1 oz. .9999 fine silver blank. Historically, these medals are legendary. The provincial government of Szechuan bought coin presses in New Jersey and arranged for U.S. Mint Engraver Charles Barber to sculpt new dies. A small number of pattern coins were struck with the original Barber dies. The surviving original coins are on loan to the Smithsonian while a separate set resides at the Shanghai Mint Museum. The Szechuan minting facility flooded. During the flood the dies were destroyed and the presses damaged but subsequently repaired. This medal is an authorized reproduction of the Barber issue.
Dragon Design: Symbol of Luck
The obverse image on the medal features the timeless Chinese Dragon, as sculpted by U.S Mint Engraver Charles Barber. This design was based on the Chinese Kwangtung dollar. The reverse image on the medal features Chinese writing that includes the year and denomination.
