The U.S. Mint is planning a series of medals honoring each of the five branches of the United States Armed Forces. The medals are struck on .999 fine silver 2.5 oz. planchets. The series is likely to be popular with collectors of military-related issues, patriotic issues, and precious metals enthusiasts.

The first medal in the series is for the United States Air Force. The series is set to be concluded in 2022.

The Air Force has humble beginnings back in 1907 when it was part of a specialty division of the U.S. Army. In 1947, after World War II, the Air Force became its own branch of the U.S. Military. Since its inception, the Air Force has become an irreplaceable contributor to America’s military dominance. It has contributed to non-military endeavors as well, including the training of some of the earliest astronauts and technological contributions to civilian flight safety around the world.

The bravery of the men and women who serve in the Air Force, and the technology and weaponry developed and deployed by the Air Force, have helped defend freedom and democracy worldwide for over 70 years.

The reverse of the medal centers on three spires that appear in the Air Force Memorial. Dressed in ceremonial garb, members of the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard stand amidst the memorial. Inscriptions on this face include "INTEGRITY FIRST," "SERVICE BEFORE SELF," and "EXCELLENCE IN ALL WE DO," which are the core values of the Air Force.
