Why add this Lycian League Ancient Silver Drachm to your collection?

At a time when Greek City-States were constantly at war with each other, the members of the Lycian League enjoyed a prolonged period of political stability and peace. The history of Lycia, specifically its development of unity among City-States, had an influential impact on modern democratic governments. Made up of Twenty-three independent City-States, the Lycian League was the first democratic union in history. Founded on proportional representation, this was an idea that inspired the writers of the United States Constitution.

Imagery dedicated to Apollo and his mythical invention.

The Lycian tradition of independence was captured on the coinage as most of the City-States, even the smallest, issued coinage. The Laureate head of Apollo facing right is depicted on the obverse of these Silver Drachms struck for the City-States of the League, 2nd to 1st Centuries, BC. The reverse features a Cithara, the ancient stringed musical instrument invented by Apollo, with palm branch and tropaion within an incuse square.
