Why purchase this ancient bronze medallion struck in honor of Roman Emperor Caracalla?

Caracalla was Emperor of the Roman Empire from AD 198-217, co-ruling with his father Septimus Severus and younger brother Geta. This impressive 40 mm diameter Bronze Medallion was struck to celebrate Caracalla's visit to the Thracian city of Perinthus in AD 215/216 while on route to face the Persians on the Eastern Front. The city hosted a dual festival in honor of the emperor, holding Actian and Pythian Games.

Design of the Commemorative Medallion

The obverse features the right facing, laureate and cuirassed portrait of Caracalla. The emperor is portrayed holding spear over his left shoulder, his breastplate adorned with the image of a gorgoneion.

A perspective view of two Neocorate temples is centered on the reverse, with two prize urns above, each containing a palm frond. The term Neocorate references Imperial authorization for the city of Perinthus to establish cults to worship the Roman emperors and their families.
