Why add this Silver Drachm from the ancient Thessaly region to your collection?

The region of Thessaly borders the Aegean Sea at the center of Greece, its capital city Larissa. Thessalians minted federal coins that were shared between the cities of the region until the late fifth century BC, when Larissa began producing its own coinage. This Silver Drachm struck in fourth century BC Larissa measures 17-18 mm in diameter and has a weight of approximately 6 grams

Beautiful Larissan Design

The obverse features the city's namesake, a beautifully detailed portrait of Larissa, the nymph of a local spring, her wild mane of tresses tamed by an ancient Greek-styled headband called an ampyx.

Illustrated on the reverse is a horse, posed with its neck bent down, about to roll forward. The Greek inscription separated by the image translates as "LARISSA." A similar image is incorporated into the current official seal of the Municipality of Larissa.

Gorgeous Mint State Ancient Coin with Fine Style Designation

This Silver Drachm of Larissa is a spectacular example of Thessalian coinage struck in the 4th Century BC. The coin is graded by NGC Ancients, the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's ancient coin grading division, to be Mint State (MS), which is comparable to a Sheldon Scale rating of 60-62, with the additional grading of 5/5 for strike quality and 3/5 for surface characteristics. The design of this coin exhibits exceptional visual impact, indicated by the designation Fine Style.
