To celebrate the enormous success of the film “Deadpool 2” that was released earlier this year and the swelling popularity of “The Merc with the Mouth,” The Perth Mint has arranged with Tuvalu to strike a 1 oz. .9999 fine silver Brillant Uncirculated coin in tribute to Marvel Comic’s sassy Deadpool character.
This issue is the follow up to the quickly sold out 2018 Black Panther and Iron Man 1 oz. issues released earlier this year by the Perth Mint for the tiny Pacific Island nation of Tuvalu. This is an officially licensed Marvel product and features a small 50,000 coin mintage. It was struck exclusively for U.S. collectors. It is a legal tender $1 coin backed by the government of Tuvalu. Tuvalu is a Polynesian island located between Hawaii and Australia. It is an independent Commonwealth nation and became the 189th member of the United Nations in 2000.
The reverse of the coin features the lovable, wise cracking, foul-mouthed mutant anti-hero Deadpool. He is pictured from the waist up, with his massive arms folded over his chest. Behind his head are the handles from his katana swords that he carries sheathed, crossing over his back. The logo “Deadpool” appears beneath the portrait. The obverse of the coin features one of the final appearances of the classic Ian Rank-Broadly portrait of Her Majesty, Queen of Australia, Elizabeth II. The Perth Mint is electing to adopt the new Jody Clark portrait on standard issues dated 2019 and after. Boxes contain 100 coins and cases contain 300 coins.
Australia’s Perth Mint enjoys a reputation today as an innovative world leader in the design and production of numismatic and bullion collectibles. It began striking coins for the British Empire as part of the Royal Mint system back in 1899. Today it strikes the beloved Kookaburra series, the widely collected Koala series and the popular Perth Lunar series to name a few.
