From the Old World to Your Collection...Dutch Lion Dollars

Hold Colonial U.S. History in The Palm of Your Hand

When representatives from the Netherlands struck out to explore the world, they lined their pockets and trunks with Dutch Lion Dollars, struck in several Dutch provinces from 1575 until 1713. They circulated in Japan, Africa, Europe, and Asia, and were some of the very first coins used in commerce in the New World that would come to be known as the United States of America.

In fact, the Dutch Lion Dollar was one of America’s first silver dollars and is listed alongside the earliest colonial issues in the United States Red Book, the best-selling U.S. coin information and reference guide.

2017 marked the 450th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Mint. To celebrate, they've released an official restrike of the Dutch Lion "Daalder," which circulated during the 16th-18th centuries. If the name sounds familiar, that's because this coin was the basis for our own U.S. dollar denomination!

In the 16th century, Lion Dollars were struck in several Dutch provinces, each with their own unique design. The 2017 Netherlands Lion Dollar Proof features the rampant Dutch Lion. and the motto of the United Provinces, CONFIDENS. DNO. NON. MOVETVR, or “Who trusts in the Lord is not moved” (“DNO” is an abbreviation of “Domino,” or “Lord”). In addition, references to the metal, weight, and fineness surrounds the design.

On the obverse is a striking image of a knight, whose shield bears the same design as the obverse. The Latin words Ordin Zel Mo No Arg, or “Silver Money of the Province of the Netherlands Confederation Zeeland,” followed by the letters TRA (representing Utrecht).
