Saint-Gaudens' Last Design Finally Minted!

Discover the Penny that COULD have been in your pocket

In the last few years, the numismatic community has seen something incredible—the unrealized designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, creator of perhaps the most beautiful coin design of all time, the $20 Gold Liberty, being resurrected as officially licensed proofs. For the first time in history, collectors are finally able to own these magnificent “what if?” designs, from Saint-Gaudens’ original Winged Liberty to his preferred Double Eagle Indian. But there is one other design created by Saint-Gaudens that never saw the light of day…

The Last Design of Saint-Gaudens

The Last Design of Saint-Gaudens

Roosevelt rushed two of these designs into production—the $20 and $10 Liberties—but Saint-Gaudens’ new Liberty design for the Bronze Cent was left behind. Instead, the new Lincoln Cent arrived in 1909 and has since become the longest-running design in U.S. Mint history. Had Saint-Gaudens lived even one more year, the Lincoln Cent may never have been struck, and the Saint-Gaudens Cent would be in our pockets today!

In a letter to President Roosevelt, Saint-Gaudens elaborated his ideas for the Obverse of $20 Gold Double Eagle. "I would place a (possibly winged) figure of liberty striding energetically forward as if on a mountain top holding aloft on one arm a shield bearing the Stars and Stripes with the words Liberty marked across the field, in the other hand, perhaps, a flaming torch. The drapery would be flowing in the breeze. My idea is to make it a living thing and typical of progress." In the final design, she quite literally lost her wings and headdress as mint officials believed the details to intricate for the minting technology of the day.

Resurrecting a Masterpiece

Now, 112 years after Saint-Gaudens’ finished plaster for the Liberty Head Cent obverse was delivered to the U.S. Mint, the National Park Foundation, in cooperation with the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, has authorized the striking of new one-ounce gold and silver proofs featuring Saint-Gaudens’ final design. Not only are these coins struck in 99.9% fine silver and 99.99% pure gold, each featuring the gorgeously frosted designs and shimmering fields that only a Proof medal can provide, but they come crafted by the imitable John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, modern numismatic legend and the man who brought Saint-Gaudens other unrealized designs into the 21st century. The obverse features Saint-Gaudens’ incredible Liberty bust, complete with a wreath of laurel leaves in her hair. If this design looks a bit familiar, that’s no coincidence—Roosevelt was so impressed with it that he had Saint-Gaudens add a feathered headdress, then used it for the obverse of the $10 Gold Indian! The reverse depicts the words “One Cent” and “United States of America” wreathed in laurels. Dual dates of 1907 and 2019 have been added just for this monumental release.
