On August 1, 2017, the U.S. Mint launched the third component of its 225th anniversary celebration coin program, the first-ever Enhanced Uncirculated Set. Now, you can order NGC-certified 10-coin sets with special "First Day - ANA" and "Denver ANA" releases, along with MCM's exclusive 225th Anniversary of the Mint labels!
The enhanced uncirculated coin set (the first-ever U.S. Mint set of coins made of cupro-nickel or clad composition with an enhanced uncirculated finish on them) will be released simultaneously through the regular distribution channels online and via telephone. You can also purchase as in-person at the Mint’s booth during the ANA World Fair of Money (#478) in Denver from August 1 to 5, at sales counters at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, and the Washington, D.C. Mint headquarters.
ModernCoinMart is attending the ANA coin show, the biggest event of the year in U.S. numismatics, that will include all kind of events such as auctions, lectures, gala dinners, and of course a huge bourse with not only countless dealers, but also representatives of major world mints that will be showcasing their upcoming coins. Plus, attendees will have the opportunity to meet former U.S. Mint Director Philip Diehl. If you attend the show, be sure to stop by the MCM table and say hello.
The enhanced uncirculated coin set highlights the Mint’s use of these new coin-minting technologies. The set, which has a mintage of 225,000 units to mark the anniversary, features ten coins that all bear an “S” Mint mark for the San Francisco Mint, as is the case with the regular 2017 proof set and silver proof set.
However, the coins in this set are different because of their special enhanced uncirculated finish, which Mint officials explained are created with a “combination of laser frosted areas and an unpolished field that accentuates design details, creating a unique contrast distinctly different from the mirror–like finish of proof coins.” This finish helps to bring out the details of different elements of the design of each coin.
There are several great coins included in the new set: Kennedy half dollar, Roosevelt dime, Lincoln cent, Jefferson nickel, and Native American dollar. This year, the Native American dollar has a likeness of Sequoyah writing, stating, “Sequoyah from Cherokee Nation” in syllabary along the border of the design and on the five 2017 American the Beautiful quarters: Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa; Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in the District of Columbia; Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri; Ellis Island in New Jersey; and George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana.
Seven previous U.S. Mint coins have an enhanced uncirculated finish: the 2013-W American Silver Eagle that was part of the two-coin West Point 75th anniversary set, one of the versions of the 2014-S Kennedy silver half dollars, the reverse of the 2014 Civil Rights Act 50th anniversary commemorative silver dollar, the 2013 $5 gold Five Star Generals commemorative coin, and the 2014-D, 2015-W, and 2016-S Native American dollars.
For those who collect America the Beautiful quarters, Native American dollars, and Kennedy halves, the 2017 enhanced uncirculated set will be the only way to obtain the enhanced version of those coins and keep their sets up to date.
In addition, the coins in this set will include the first-ever enhanced uncirculated Lincoln pennies, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, and America the Beautiful quarters. Sales are expected to be brisk for these sets with a likely quick sell-out.
Because the Mint will sell these sets at the Denver ANA coin show, the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) announced that they will perform on-site grading and that they will be eligible for special labels, which are available at MCM!
