In 1987, the Simpson family debuted as a 30-second segment on The Tracey Ullman Show. It remained a mainstay on the show for two years before becoming a half hour series. The show became a sensation overnight. Today, the show can be seen in 20 languages and in 60 countries. Last year, The Simpsons became the longest running scripted prime time show in the history of television. Now, the Perth Mint is celebrating the show with three silver coins issued by Tuvalu. This Donut features one of the shows most iconic images, Homer’s favorite snack. The coin’s design was inspired by a holey dollar coin and features a round hole in the center, giving it a donut shape. It was struck from one ounce of .9999 fine silver.
In February 2019, Perth Mint is celebrating the iconic television show with two silver coin releases, each of which has a very limited mintage. At just 3,000 pieces, this 1 oz. coin has the highest mintage of the two. Just 2,000 colorized Simpsons Family 2 oz. coins were issued. Both issues are ‘must have’ for serious fans of the series.
Due to the hole at the center of the design, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II has been moved to the bottom. The right-side effigy is the work of Ian Rank-Broadley and has featured on Australian coinage for two decades. Her name, “ELIZABETH II,” is inscribed at the top of the coin. Along the rim to t he monarch’s left are inscriptions of the coin’s weight, “1 OZ,” and purity, “9999 AG,” as well as the date, “2019.” To her right are the country of issue, “TUVALU,” and its face value, “1 DOLLAR.”
The reverse design features Homer Simpson’s iconic donut. It has pink frosting and sprinkles. There is also a bite missing in the upper right. Matt Groening’s signature is included to the lower left of the hole, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark, which is recognized as a sign of exceptional quality among collectors throughout the world, is on the right just inside the edge.
