During the minting process, any impurities were carefully removed from the space-flown metal leaving the pure material to be incorporated into each of these special collectibles.
Take home the entire collection with one purchase that includes a 1 oz. silver, 1 oz. copper and 1 oz. silver clad medal. Each collectible 3-piece set is accompanied by our exclusive Apollo Label and display case.
Made exclusively for ModernCoinMart's launch of this program, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation has designed a special label to further celebrate this monumental release.
Each label includes an image taken from the Robbins Medal of the Eagle landing. The background image features the surface of the moon.
CAG (Collectibles Authentication Guaranty), an affiliate of NGC and PMG (Paper Money Guaranty), was selected to certify original Robbins Medals among other memorabilia from Armstrong’s estate. These items will feature a co-branded NGC-CAG label very similar to this exclusive label.
To create the famous Robbins Medallions, the Robbins Company uses a die, pictured right, of the design. Softened metal is hit, or "struck", with the die to produce the finished medals. For the moon landing missions, the launched, landed, and returned fields were left blank, and dates were later engraved.
Only 100 to 450 original medals have been created for each mission. That limited number, the fact that Robbins Medallions are closely associated with astronauts, and that they have actually flown in space, makes them very sought-after collectibles. The top 10 auction prices for the original medals are from $30,000 to nearly $62,000.
ModernCoinMart was recently granted access to the original 1969 Apollo 11 Robbins Medal dies. Modeled after the originals, new dies were made to create today's stunning commemorative Robbins Medals.
Each silver-plated commemorative arrives in a story-card which includes an Apollo 11 NASA patch! The medal is secured in a capsule that can be popped out of the story-card.
It is NASA tradition, ever since Gemini V, for the crew members to design their mission patch. The originals are worn by the astronauts on their space suits.
Fun Fact: On the Apollo 11 patch, the eagle was originally carrying an olive branch in its beak. Bob Gilruth, director of then-named Manned Spacecraft Center, believed the eagle’s extended talons looked too hostile. The branch was moved from the mouth to the talons to create a less threatening design.
*The NASA patch is included with the silver-plated variation only.
Robbins Medals are medallions made exclusively for NASA astronauts. The Robbins Company, a jewelry manufacturer, was commissioned by NASA to work with the astronauts on the design of the medals for each mission into space, beginning with Apollo 7. Only 100 to 450 medals were created per mission, and they were only available for purchase by the NASA astronauts and members of the Astronaut Flight Office (AFO). Once created, the Robbins Medals traveled aboard the astronauts’ missions into space.
