PRODUCTION AND AUCTION OF THE ROBBINS MEDALS
To create the famous Robbins Medallions, the Robbins Company uses a die, pictured right, of the design. Softened metal is hit, or "struck", with the die to produce the finished medals. For the moon landing missions, the launched, landed, and returned fields were left blank, and dates were later engraved.
Only 100 to 450 original medals have been created for each mission. That limited number, the fact that Robbins Medallions are closely associated with astronauts, and that they have actually flown in space, makes them very sought-after collectibles. The top 10 auction prices for the original medals are from $30,000 to nearly $62,000.
ModernCoinMart was recently granted access to the original 1969 Apollo 11 Robbins Medal dies. Modeled after the originals, new dies were made to create today's stunning commemorative Robbins Medals.
