Commemorative Design

Commemorative Design

The U.S. Mint went out of this world for the design. The observe pays tribute to the space missions that led up to the Moon landing, with the inscriptions “MERCURY,” “GEMINI,” and “APOLLO,” separated by phases of the Moon, arched clockwise along the coin’s top, and the famous footprint on the lunar surface in the center, with a concave curved surface shaped like a bowl. While the convex curved domed reverse features the image of Armstrong’s famous photo of Buzz in which Aldrin’s visor reflects an image of Armstrong standing beside the landing module. The unique design that mimics the visor of an astronaut’s helmet represents just the second time in history that the U.S. Mint has struck a coin with a curved surface.

The Eagle Has Landed

In 1961, President, John F. Kennedy, boldly declared our Nation’s goal of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth by the end of the decade. Eight short years later, with the commitment of over 400,000 Americans, and unprecedented engineering and scientific advancements, Apollo 11 traveled 240,000 miles to the moon in 76 hours. NASA Astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins made world history, upon Armstrong’s historic transmission; “The Eagle has landed!" Witnessed by 530 million people around the world in a live telecast; a historic moment, permanently etched in the minds of all those who experienced the first lunar landing.

50 Years Later

This Commemorative Coin Program celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the NASA space program’s race to the Moon. Anticipated by collectors everywhere, especially for those who watched the epic moon landing in 1969, these special curved designs for a $5 gold coin, a $1 silver coin, a half-dollar clad coin, and a large 5-ounce $1 silver proof coin are sure to the perfect addition to any collection!
