The American Silver Eagle series is an integral part of coin collections for both the savvy stacker and discerning collectors. This series has been immensely popular since it was first authorized by the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. Produced and backed by the United States’ Mint, they are struck in a variety of finishes including proof, uncirculated or “burnished” finish, as well as the beloved bullion version. Each January, the Mint releases a new version, bearing the iconic Walking Liberty design and the current year of issue.
Struck as America’s official silver bullion coin, Silver Eagles are the modern-day successors of silver dollars, such as the Morgan and Peace Dollar. Each coin is guaranteed by the United States Mint to be struck in .999 fine silver and to weigh in at 1 troy ounce (or 31.2 grams), carrying with it a face value of $1US.
As one of the most iconic, sought-after and trusted bullion issues in the world, the new issue of the series is one of the most widely-anticipated releases each year. ModernCoinMart continues to provide these popular releases to customers worldwide. With our large selection and free domestic shipping, you can trust your order will arrive quickly and securely.
The obverse features the quintessential design of Lady Liberty which was first used on the Walking Liberty half dollar, issued in 1916. Often referred to as the most beautiful design ever struck in silver by the United States Mint, it was designed by Adolph A. Weinman. The design features Lady Liberty in all her glory; striding towards the new dawn, Stars and Stripes enfolding her head, while she cradles the symbols of both civil and military strength, the laurel and the oak. The motto inscription “Liberty” appears at the rim. The motto “In God We Trust” appears at Liberty’s side.
The image used on the reverse of the series was designed by the 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John M. Mercanti. The design features the familiar Eagle clasping a shield, while it grasps arrows in the right talon as well as an olive branch in the left, showcasing both the United States’ ability to defend itself as well as the hope for a peaceful future. The strikingly minimalist designs of the obverse and the reverse are laden with patriotic symbolism down to the small details- the thirteen colonies are represented by thirteen stars above the eagle’s head on the reverse. The eagle clutches a ribbon in his mouth with the Latin phrase “E Pluribus Unim” which means “Out of many, one.” The inscriptions along the rim include “The United States of America” “1 oz. Fine Silver” and “One Dollar.” The entire coin is a beautiful representation of not only the United States’ history and values, but the evolution of the modern coin industry as well.
