The War in the Pacific National Historic Park is located on the island of Guam in the Northern Mariana Islands and serves as the subject for the 48th issue in the 5 oz. Silver America the Beautiful (ATB) series. The American War in the Pacific National Historic Park was created by Congress in 1978. It honors the sacrifice of those who served and paid the ultimate price in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
The popular 5 oz. silver ATB series was introduced in 2010. Each issue features one historic site or park from each U.S. state or territory. Each issue is struck on 5 oz. .999 pure silver planchets. Two varieties are released, the bullion uncirculated version which is sold as singles, rolls, and monster boxes, and the Specimen version, which is accompanied by a stunning clamshell presentation packaging from the U.S. Mint. MCM will also have examples of both varieties featuring sought after designations, coveted signature labels from Numismatic luminaries and of course, the highest grades certified by Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC) and Professional Grading Service (PCGS).
The reverse design of this issue features the image of two American soldiers going ashore at Asan Bay, Guam. Reverse inscriptions include: WAR IN THE PACIFIC, GUAM, 2019 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The image was designed by Joel Iskowtz and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso.
The obverse image used on the America the Beautiful series is the timeless portrait of the First President of the United States, George Washington. The image was designed in 1932 by John Flanagan for the circulating U.S quarter dollar. Obverse inscriptions include: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR.This design of Mr. Washington is based on the marble bust sculpted by French artist Jean-Antoine Houdin. The famous bust is now in the permanent collection of the President’s home and historic site in Mt. Vernon, Virginia.
The America the Beautiful 5 oz. silver coins are the largest silver coins struck at the U.S. Mint. The obverse design featured is the famous effigy of George Washington used on the circulating U.S. quarter dollar. Each issue has a unique reverse featuring a design that honors a National Park or historic site in each U.S. State or U.S. Territory. The America the Beautiful series began in 2010 and will be finished with the 56th issue in the series in 2021.
The Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Mint is the only facility that strikes the 5 oz. silver series. A German coin press was installed specifically for striking this popular series. The press was put in place on March 1, 2010. It produces over one million coins every year. The .999 pure silver 5 oz. planchets for the ATB series are sourced from Sunshine Minting, Inc. located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
