American Memorial Park, Northern Mariana Islands America the Beautiful 5 oz. Coin Design
The reverse design of this bullion issue features a native Chamorro woman wearing traditional garb at the Flag Circle and Court of Honor in the American Memorial Park. She rests her hand on one of the granite plaques, on which the names of the American Servicemen who died during the Marianas Campaign, which lasted from June 15, 1944 until July 9, 1944. Reverse inscriptions include: AMERICAN MEMORIAL PARK, N. MARIANA ISLANDS, 2019 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The image was designed by Donna Weaver of the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) and engraved by Phebe Hemphill.
The obverse design used on the ATB series is the ubiquitous portrait of the Father of our Country, President George Washington. The image was designed by John Flanagan for the circulating U.S. 1932 quarter dollar. Obverse inscriptions include: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. As this is the bullion issue, the piece will not bear a mint mark.
This design, along with most of the images of Mr. Washington that we use today, was inspired by the marble bust crafted by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdin. The statue itself is now in permanent residence at his the President’s home in Mt. Vernon, Virginia.
