The American Memorial Park, located on the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, is the subject of the 47th issue in the 5 oz. Silver America the Beautiful (ATB) series. The American Memorial Park in the Northern Mariana Islands was created by the United States Congress on August 18, 1978. It serves to honor the American Servicemen and local civilians who sacrificed all, during the Marianas Campaign of World War II. A memorial to those who perished, the Court of Honor features the American flag surrounded by the Army, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard service flags. The Court of Honor has 26 granite panels on which the names of 5,204 American service members who died are written.
The reverse design of this bullion issue features a native Chamorro woman wearing traditional garb at the Flag Circle and Court of Honor in the American Memorial Park. She rests her hand on one of the granite plaques, on which the names of the American Servicemen who died during the Marianas Campaign, which lasted from June 15, 1944 until July 9, 1944. Reverse inscriptions include: AMERICAN MEMORIAL PARK, N. MARIANA ISLANDS, 2019 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The image was designed by Donna Weaver of the Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) and engraved by Phebe Hemphill.
The obverse design used on the ATB series is the ubiquitous portrait of the Father of our Country, President George Washington. The image was designed by John Flanagan for the circulating U.S. 1932 quarter dollar. Obverse inscriptions include: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. As this is the bullion issue, the piece will not bear a mint mark.
This design, along with most of the images of Mr. Washington that we use today, was inspired by the marble bust crafted by French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdin. The statue itself is now in permanent residence at his the President’s home in Mt. Vernon, Virginia.
The popular 5 oz. ATB program was authorized in Title II of the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008. The ATB Silver Bullion Coins contain five oz. of .999 fine silver. They are the largest silver coins struck at the U.S. Mint. The obverse design used on the series shares the obverse image of George Washington used on the circulating U.S. quarter dollar. The reverses feature a design that honors one National Park or historic site in each U.S. State or U.S. Territory. The America the Beautiful series was started in 2010 and will be completed
