The Armenian Central Bank will be issuing the release of another exclusive Noah's Ark coin for 2018. The coin celebrates Armenia's rich history of the Biblical story of the Great Flood created by God and where Noah was told to build an Ark to save two of each of the animals to ensure their survival. As the story goes, once the waters receded, the Ark found safe harbor on Mount Ararat located on the border area of Armenia & Turkey.
In the Old Testament of the Bible, the Book of Exodus describes the story of Noah's Ark during a global flood that was to last 150 days and nights; the flood was created by God as punishment to humans that disobeyed his laws. Scientists have spent a great deal of time and money to find concrete evidence that this did occur - but it is still considered just a story for now. However, millions upon millions of people are convinced that it was a real event and look to celebrate the meaning behind it today. Noah's Ark was a great ship that was built to be large enough to carry two of each animal species along with Noah & his family. Noah knew nothing about building a boat and all of his friends and neighbors ridiculed him for building the ark. No one believed that a great flood was coming - but he stood fast to his vision and saved all life on Earth in the process.
Beginning in 2011, the Armenian government decided to have this bullion 1 oz. Silver coin struck by commissioning the Leipziger Edelmetallverarbeitungs GmbH, an affiliate company of Geiger Edelmetalle, to make the coin each year to further cement the story of the Great Flood for centuries to come. The specifications were determined in 2011, and the coin has been made each year to be exactly as it was first designed. In this first year, they created the coin in 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz. and 1 oz. sizes. Today, it is struck in 1/4 oz., 1/2 oz., 1 oz., 5 oz., 10 oz., 1 kilo and 5 kilo.
Designed by Eduard Kurghinyan, the obverse of the coin is to have the traditional coat of arms of Armenia embossed in the center of the design, which resides on the belly of an Eagle / Lion paired creature. The obverse also features the nominal value in Drams, (500 Drams for the 1 oz. silver coin), the purity of the silver, as well as the year and precious metal weight. It is framed on the inner rim the words: "REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA" in English as well as Armenian.
The clever design on the reverse of the coin features a gorgeous sunrise rising above Mount Ararat as the Turtle Dove returns to the Ark with the coveted olive branch - thus signifying the end of the great flood. The design includes the Ark floating near the mountain in calming waters and with an embossed inscription along the rim "NOAH'S ARK" in both English & Armenia as well. The suns ray's and the calming waters make up the fields of the coin and the Turtle Dove appears to come out of the coin by hovering over the rim and the fields.
