The annual U.S. Mint Proof Set is a mainstay of coin collections and a tradition in the hobby since 1936. Many collectors’ first exposure to the hobby is through being given a proof set of their birth year or as an annual gift from a more experienced collector or family member. These sets provide an easy and cost-effective way to get an excellent example of every U.S. coin issued for circulation that year in GEM Proof condition.
Proof coinage is created through a special process and handling techniques. The production involves highly-polished dies and coin blanks, and a multi-strike process. This creates sharply detailed coins with brilliant surfaces. Most modern proofs exhibit a contrasted or “cameo” appearance. The raised design details of the coin have a frosty appearance while the fields have a mirrored or reflective appearance.
The 2017 U.S. Mint’s Clad Proof Set will be struck at the world-famous San Francisco branch of the Mint and bear the iconic “S” Mint mark.
The set will consist of ten coins separated into two groups. Each group will be housed in the familiar plastic lens used by the Mint to encapsulate and protect the coins.
The first lens will contain 2017 issues of the Lincoln Cent, the Jefferson Nickel, the Roosevelt Dime, and the Kennedy Half Dollar. These coins all have the well-known, standard designs. The first lens will also include the 2017 Native American $1 coin. The obverse of this coin will continue to feature the familiar image of Sacagawea as designed by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. The reverse, however, will show off a brand-new design honoring Sequoyah of the Cherokee Nation, the creator of the Cherokee language. This magnificent image of Sequoyah in profile was designed by U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) designer, Chris Costello and was sculpted by the U.S. Mint’s Charles Vickers.
The second lens will contain the eighth annual release of the five quarters from the America the Beautiful (ATB) Quarters Program. The reverse designs on each of these issues honor the Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa; the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, DC; the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Missouri; Ellis Island (the Statue of Liberty National Monument) in New Jersey; and the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Indiana. The common obverse of these coins features the modified John Flanagan portrait of George Washington that was introduced in 1932.
The 2017 U.S. Mint Proof Set will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The release of these collector favorites was announced as March 29th, and you can expect them to ship not long after. Sign-up to be notified when these sets are available, and be among the first to own a 2017 U.S. Proof Coin Set!
