Australia’s Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle bullion coin series began in 2014, after being designed by 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti. Famous for designing the heraldic eagle on reverse of the world-renown American Silver Eagle, this new eagle design created by Mercanti in 2014, brought him to the limelight once again. This release garnered much attention for not only for the beauty of the design, but also because it was the first time in history that a U.S. Mint Chief Engraver had designed a coin for another country.
Struck from 1 oz. of .999 fine silver, these fine silver bullion coins have quickly risen to fame among silver stackers and collectors alike. The series has continued from its release back in 2014, with an issue every year. Now, collectors eagerly await the upcoming 2017 issue!
The Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle series began with a stunning reverse design of a Wedge-Tailed Eagle in flight. This highly appreciated design was used again for the Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle in 2015, which led many collectors to think that the series would use the same design for its duration. These thoughts were ended in 2016, when John Mercanti created an entirely new design for that year’s issue.
Instead of the design of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle in flight, it now depicted the eagle perched at the top of a barbed wire fence post – surely a common scene from the Australian outback. It is currently unknown if this beautiful design will be used again on the 2017 Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle, or if it will be an entirely new design. Whatever is used, you can expect to see it at ModernCoinMart (MCM) as soon as it is available!
The obverse design of the 2017-P Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle will show a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the current monarch of Great Britain. It is unknown if the old portrait designed by Ian Rank-Broadley will continue to be used, or if the fifth definitive portrait created by Jody Clark for Great Britan in 2016 will make a first time appearance for the series in 2017.
Unfortunately, the Perth Mint has not yet announced a release date of the 2017 Australia Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle, and no information or pictures are available.
