The American Buffalo gold coin series began in 2006. Each coin is struck from .9999 fine gold, also known as "24 karat." This makes the Gold Buffalo the first-ever .9999 fine gold coin produced by the U.S. Mint. Gold Buffalos are available in 1 Troy oz. sizes, with the exception of the year 2008, in which Proof Buffalos were produced in 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/10 oz. sizes. Proof American Gold Buffalo coins have very limited mintages, the lowest so far being in 2008 when only 18,863 1 oz. coins were produced.
The obverse features a rendition of James Earle Fraser's design, previously seen on classic Buffalo Nickels. Fraser was a student of Augustus Saint Gaudens, a master sculptor and engraver. A Native American is featured, but with a twist; this Native American has physical features from different tribes combined into one person to symbolize the unity between the Native people.
Also designed by Fraser, the reverse features an American Buffalo, or Bison, standing on a rocky terrain. This design symbolizes the majestic American land and its natural inhabitants.
