American Platinum Eagle coins were the first platinum bullion coins offered by the U.S. Mint. While the series never reached the same customer base as that of the American Silver Eagle or the American Gold Eagle, it was immediately a choice pick among stackers and collectors. Coins are struck in fractional $10 1/10 oz., $25 ¼ oz., and $50 ½ oz. sizes, along with a full $100 1 oz. coin. Each of these coins boast a very fine composition of .9995 platinum.
Though the series began full-force in 1997, no coins were issued between 2009 and 2013, and only 1 oz. coins were issued when the series resumed in 2014. This was followed by another year with no bullion American Platinum Eagles as the U.S. Mint searched for platinum planchet suppliers in 2015. Finally, a 1 oz. coin was issued in 2016, and much to the appreciation of collectors, a 1 oz. American Platinum Eagle has been issued again in 2017!
The design present on the obverse of the Platinum Eagle Series was created by the John Mercanti. Legendary creator of the American Silver Eagle reverse design, and now the Australian Silver Wedge Tailed Eagle reverse designs, he created this design during his tenure as Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. It shows a portrait of the Statue of Liberty, titled “Liberty looking to the future.” “LIBERTY” arcs across the top of the design, while “2017” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” lie to her left.
The reverse design was created by sculptor-engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. of the U.S. Mint. Although retired from his position, Rogers still works for the U.S. Mint as an independent artist under contract and is known for his many stunning designs such as those on the Sacagawea Dollar and on the reverse of this 2017 American Platinum Eagle. It shows a bald eagle in flight with the sun’s rays shining behind it. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” presides above the design, while “.9995 PLATINUM 1 oz.” lies to the right of the coin, and “$100” is in the exergue.
