Continuing the tradition of honoring U.S. national parks, the third 5 oz. silver coin in the America the Beautiful series released this year commemorates the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The park itself is located in the great State of Missouri and is the first national park to celebrate and protect a river system.

"Ozark Riverways…was really a pleasure to sculpt. It had a lot of natural elements. It had all these leaves coming down. It had this beautiful old…water mill. And there was a ton of water coming out. And everyone wanted to make sure that it actually looked like water and not just a straight road with lines on it. So it was going to be a challenge, but I was really proud of the fact that it actually looks like flowing water."
- Renata Gordon
The National Park System officially began in 1872, when an act of congress classified Yellowstone as “dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." The park services now have over 450 classified national parks which span the U.S. and its many territories. The America the Beautiful Quarter program celebrates a portion of these parks that exist in the U.S. This 5 oz. coin program first began in 2010 with the Arkansas Hot Springs coin and continues right now with the third release of 2017, which commemorates Ozark National Scenic Riverways in 5 oz. of .999 fine silver.
The design for this silver coin was created by Ronald D. Sanders, an AIP designer, and sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Renata Gordon. The coin was struck to celebrate this very old river system on a 5 Troy oz. .999 fine silver coin for the America the Beautiful series. This quarter dollar measures 76.2mm in diameter and has raised rims to accentuate the fields. There is an inner band of silver in which the Mint has inscribed “OZARK RIVERWAYS,” the state “MISSOURI,” as well as the year “2017.” Finishing the inscriptions on the reverse of the coin are the traditional words “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” which translates from Latin into English as “Out of Many, One” – the motto of the U.S.
The obverse of this well-designed coin carries the 1932 John Flanagan design of President George Washington in profile, and has the standard inscriptions of “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” with “QUARTER DOLLAR” to state its monetary value. This design is standard on all of the America the Beautiful 5 oz. silver quarters and will continue to be until the last of the 56 parks are memorialized in fine silver.
Some of the largest fresh spring waterways originated from the Ozark Mountains and traveled down into the Missouri inlets and river ways. A deep tradition in these parts, of “gigging” and fresh water fishing, is still alive and well to this day. Part of this tradition included a serene scene of the Alley Mill (captured on this coin), which at one time harnessed the power of the Jacks Fork and Current Rivers in order to produce enough energy to mill wheat into flour. The beautiful, flowing Current River runs into numerous caves and inlets and eventually continues out into the Great Mississippi River. These river ways made it impossible for the early settlers to get across because of the strong current, so they never settled west of the Mississippi.
Today, there are numerous animal species that are unique just to this area. In fact, it is known that at least 38 of these aquatic and invertebrate animals are protected by the National Park System as they continue to keep the delicate ecosystem intact for all to enjoy for years to come. The park currently includes over 80,000 acres of protected land and this includes the Ozark trails. These trails are used by millions of visitors and stretch over 350 miles.
