The 2017 Frederick Douglass ATB 5 oz. Silver Coins commemorate the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site located in the Distrcit of Colombia. Founded in 1988, It preserves the estate of a man who is considered to be one of the most prominent African-Americans of the 19th century - Frederick Douglass.
Author, government official, journalist, and civil rights activist, Douglass began his career when he purchased his freedom between 1847 and 1848. Instead of participating in a campaign of violence, he chose to use the power of words to fight slavery. When criticized for his discussions with slave owners, he declared: “I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”
He later became U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. In 1872 he became the first African-American to appear on a presidential ballot (as vice-presidential candidate). Douglass accepted the appointment of U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia when Rutherford B. Hays became President (1877-1881).
Visitors to this historic site, based in the historical neighborhood of Anacostia in Washington D.C., can see the house Douglass resided in for 17 years up to the time of his death. He named it Cedar Hill.
The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site America the Beautiful Coin has a reverse designed by Thomas Hipschen, a member of the U.S. Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program. Phebe Hemphill, U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver, is responsible for sculpting the original plaster. The obverse design was created and sculpted by John Flanagan back in 1932.
