2016-W Proof American Platinum Eagles

The 2016 Proof American Platinum Eagle is part of a 2-Coin, 2-year series that started in 2015. This series was created, as stated by the U.S. Mint, to feature "coins with modern reverse (tails side) designs that are innovative, beautiful and representative of our nation's core values of liberty and freedom." This is accomplished in 2016 with a stunning created by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by U.S. Mint engraver Joseph Menna depicting Liberty. She holds an olive branch in her left hand to symbolize peace, and a torch in her right to symbolize enlightenment. A bald eagle with outstretched wings is set behind Liberty, serving as a symbol of freedom. The obverse is the same "Portrait of Liberty" design created by John Mercanti that has appeared on every Platinum Eagle Release so far. This coin has been issued out of 1 oz. of .9995 fine platinum, the U.S. Mint standard, and as legal tender of $100. It conforms to the standards of the American Platinum Eagle series, such as a diameter of 32.7mm, a thickness of 2.39mm, a reeded edge, and the "W" Mint mark signifying that it was struck at the West Point Mint. The mintage has been increased this year, and is set at 10,000.
