2016 Proof Silver American Liberty Medals

2016 High Relief Silver American Liberty Medals

Many collectors are familiar with the $100 1 oz. High Relief Gold American Liberty Coin struck by the West Point Mint last year. What most collectors will be excited to learn, and what many were already hoping for back in 2015, is a 1 oz. Proof Silver Medal struck with the same quality design. This hope has become a reality!

ModernCoinMart is proud to offer two different versions of the 2016 1 oz. Proof Silver American Liberty Medal

Although plans to Mint a Silver medal matching the designs of the $100 Gold American Liberty coin were denied in 2015, they were accepted for 2016! The medal has been struck from 1 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver, with a Proof finish geared towards collectors. It is struck on the same planchets used for American Silver Eagles, which means the fine design is spread out over 40.6 mm. Only 12,500 medals have been struck!

As mentioned, this medal bears the same design seen on the $100 Gold American Liberty coin struck in 2015. Unlike 2015’s $100 Gold American Liberty coin, however, this 2016 silver version is not legal tender and bears no denomination. The obverse design shows a modern depiction of Liberty, holding a torch and an American flag. It was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill. The reverse design, created by Paul C. Balan and sculpted by Donald Everhart II, shows an eagle in flight holding an olive branch.

West Point and San Francisco Versions

This medal has been produced by both the West Point and the San Francisco U.S. Mint facilities. Because both facilities struck this medal using their respective "S" and "W" Mint marks, two different versions of the medal are available to collectors. This is similar to the 10th anniversary of 9/11 medals issued by the U.S. Mint back in 2011. Medals were struck by San Francisco and West Point Mints, resulting in "S" and "W" Mint Marks.

Besides this difference in the Mint marks, the design on all 2016 Silver American Liberty Medals is the same for all pieces issued. Each Medal was struck 3 times under 219 metric tons of pressure by a Graebener GMP 360 TK coinage press. The medals were minted using a vertical die, the obverse struck by a hammer die and the reverse created by the anvil die.
