In order to better honor the memory of president Ronald Reagan, the U.S. Mint has changed the items included in this final set:
Like any Presidential Dollar, this coin is struck using 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel. This cocktail of metals turns out quite beautifully, particularly when the coin is struck using the reverse proof finish. These coins boast edge lettering that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “2016” and the San Francisco Mint mark “S.” Each coin has a diameter of 26.5mm and a weight of 8.1g.
The obverse design shows a portrait of President Reagan staring straight ahead. Created by U.S. Mint artist infusion program designer, Richard A. Masters and U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver, Joseph Menna, this coin is inscribed with “RONALD REAGAN,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “40th PRESIDENT 1981-1989.” The artist’s initials, “RAM” and “JFM” are present on Reagan’s right and left shoulders respectively.
The reverse design depicts the Statue of Liberty. Created by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Don Everhart, this design was created back in 2007 and has been used on every presidential dollar to date. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” appears around the design, and “$1” appears directly next to the statue.
Unlike previous sets that have included a silver medal, this final set includes a 1.5” bronze medal. This medal is struck by the U.S. Mint facility in Philadelphia, using planchets composed of 90% copper and 10% zinc. Created as a replica of the gold congressional medal that honored the service of President Ronald Reagan, and his wife, First Lady Nancy Reagan, this medal is presented with a design that shows impressive detail.
The obverse of the medal shows a portrait of Ronald Reagan next to his wife, Nancy Reagan. The inscriptions, “RONALD AND NANCY REAGAN,” and “BY ACT OF CONGRESS 2000” all appear on the design.
The reverse of this congressional medal shows an image of a Bald Eagle in flight, with a background of the American Flag. "PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH" is inscribed at the center-left of the design, with "DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP 1981-1989" present at the bottom of the design.
In honor of the Liberty Coin Act, which President Reagan signed into law on July 9, 1985, The U.S. Mint is including a 2016 Proof American Silver Eagle in the set. The popular American Eagle coin series was authorized by this act, and including a Silver Eagle serves as an excellent reminder of the man that started it all. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the coin series, and every coin has been struck with incuse edge lettering reading “30th ANNIVERSARY.”
Adolph Weinman’s famous Walking Liberty design, which he created for a silver half dollar back in 1916, appears on the obverse of the American Silver Eagle. This design has been the obverse of every American Silver Eagle struck, and shows the female embodiment of Lady Liberty striding in front of the sun hovering above the horizon. The inscriptions “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2016” all appear around the design.
John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design appears on the reverse. Based off of the official seal of the U.S., this stunning design was created in 1986 just for the American Silver Eagle. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “1 OZ. FINE SILVER~ONE DOLLAR” appear on the design, along with the West Point “W” Mint mark.
This set also includes an authentic portrait of President Reagan which was engraved by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, along with a booklet that includes images of Reagan’s life and presidency. When combined with the incredible numismatic items included, this impressive set is a must-have for a U.S. coin collection.
