Every year, coin collectors eagerly await the release of the Proof American Silver Eagle. 2016 is a big year for this coin, for many reasons. First and foremost is the fact that 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the popular coin series. First struck in 1986, the American Silver Eagle bullion series has been issued every year, with this Proof version missing only one release in 2009. Another major advent for this coin is the fact that its Walking Liberty design, created by Adolph A. Weinman for use on a new half dollar back in 1916, is now celebrating its centennial!
Despite some speculation that the American Silver Eagle would be struck with a new reverse design in 2016, the bullion coins issued earlier this year show that 2016 American Silver Eagles carry the same Heraldic Eagle design created by John Mercanti for all on previous issues. The obverse design has remained the same, featuring Adolph Weinman's 100-year-old Walking Liberty design. However, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of this infamous release, the U.S. Mint has added a plain edge with special incuse edge lettering reading "30th ANNIVERSARY."
This new edge lettering is added to the Silver Eagles using a three-piece collar. At the same moment that the anvil and hammer dies strike the proof planchet, the 3 pieces of the collar connect, forming the lettering along the edge of the coin. The die always strikes the lettering at the same location on the edge. This will, if viewing the coin from the obverse side, be at the 6 o'clock position. This new edge lettering is certain to be a major addition to the American Silver Eagle coin series!
