Spectacular 2023 Maple Leafs from the Royal Canadian Mint Appear to Be in Mourning
Super Incuse, Black Rhodium, Reverse Proof, Perfect, FDP/FDI

Canada Maple Leafs Have Been Collectors’ Favorites for Decades
Since 1979, beautiful Maple Leaf coins from the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) have grown steadily in popularity with collectors and buyers of bullion coins. With reverses featuring the iconic sugar maple leaf that has symbolized Canada and Canadians for nearly 300 years, Gold Maple Leafs were introduced in 1979 and Silver Maple Leafs in 1988. Originally struck in 99.9% fineness, the RCM began setting the high-purity standard in 1982, striking Maple Leafs with 99.99% pure gold and silver fineness—and has ever since.

The RCM Is Renowned for History-Making Designs
The RCM made numismatic history in 2018, striking the iconic Silver and Gold Maple Leaf series with incuse designs. Relief projecting inward rather than outward provided an extremely compelling effect that spurred many other major mints to strike modern incuse products of their own. As impressive as that was, the RCM was only scratching the surface of the mint’s capabilities. For 2021, the Mint debuted the world’s first-ever Super Incuse Gold and Silver Maples, where the incuse strike sank down 1.5 mm into the surface of the coin, creating a steep, canyon-like difference in depth that was 5 times deeper than the incuse strike seen previously—so deep in fact that even after the RCM switched to thicker planchets, the strike still nearly touched the center of the coin, stopping just shy at 40% of the coin’s thickness.

Honoring the Late Queen Elizabeth II One Last Time in 2023, in Breathtaking Fashion
While the RCM has not yet made an official statement, it is highly likely that 2023 will be the last year that the Maple Leafs will feature the effigy of Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, on the obverse. Standard bullion Maple Leaf coins, as well as all many of the 2023 Canadian collector’s coins, struck for the year, have seen the addition of the dates “1952-2022” alongside the Queen’s effigy, in commemoration of her reign. But few coins issued in Canada or anywhere around the world so embody the feeling of mourning as these 2023 Super Incuse Maples.

Struck using the same groundbreaking technology the mint used on their 2021 and 2022 Super Incuse Maples, this 2023 issue has been crafted with a selective arrangement of black Rhodium plating. Found in the copper-nickel sulfide ores of Ontario, Canada, Rhodium is the rarest of all non-radioactive metals. In order to achieve this dark, near-black look, layers of black Rhodium are built up to a precise level in order to achieve just the right color. This was a special challenge for RCM engineers who had to find a way to apply this Rhodium plating with the same consistency on every coin, including inside the super incuse maple design.

On the reverse, a lonely, black maple struck deep into the center of the coin seems to represent a country still in mourning. Yet on the obverse, black fields and a polished effigy present Queen Elizabeth II as a radiant gold and silver light shining in the darkness. These coins are dramatic, somber and absolutely astonishing!

A Stunning Reverse Proof Finish
Each 2023 Super Incuse Maple Leaf carries all the benefits of a traditional proof coin—multiple strikes, clean, sharp designs, and frosted and polished finishes. However, as the name suggests, these reverse proof coins flip the frosted and polished areas, providing a whole new effect—which is especially stunning when combined with the dramatic depth from a super incuse strike, and the exceptional black Rhodium plating seen here.

High Purity Gold and Silver Standards
The RCM’s tradition of high-purity gold and silver Maple Leaf coins continues with these 2023 Super Incuse Maple Leafs! You can secure one of these coins struck in two ounces of high-purity 99.99% pure gold, or struck in one ounce of 99.99% fine silver. Or you can select from two 2-Pc. sets consisting of both coins.

These Maple Leaf Coins Are Perfect!
Collectors only want the best of the best for their collections, and you can get these high-purity Maple Leaf Proofs certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition. Coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with a top 70 grade representing perfection, even under magnification.

And They Have Sought-After, Hard-to-Obtain Designations!
In addition to being perfect, a limited number of these Canadian legal-tender proofs have been certified by NGC with a First Day of Issue (FDI) designation—which means they were struck on or before their official day of release—and also the very-hard-to-obtain First Day of Production (FDP) designation—which means these coins were struck on the very first day the coins were produced. FDI and FDP proofs are coveted because they are sharp, struck with fresh dies, and because they represent only a fraction of the overall population.

These 2023 Gold and Silver Maple Leaf Coins are not only the best of the best, they’re also the first of the best.

And the Cherry on Top? Custom Incuse Maple Leaf Labels
These commemorative coins are slabbed by NGC with maple leaf labels that actually share the incuse effects of the coin. The label carries a debossed maple shape to create an incused effect, and unique to this 2023 issue, the typical red foil inlay was replaced with a black maple leaf in the style of the coin itself.

Extremely Limited Mintages
Striking high-purity Super Incuse Maple Leafs is no easy task. Mintages of these proofs are incredibly limited, with a mere 275 two-ounce gold proofs authorized, and only 8,000 one-ounce silver proofs authorized. Even fewer of these coins have been submitted to NGC for grading and returned as flawless PF70 condition, certified as FDI or FDP.

What all that means is that your best bet for securing these beautiful, historic coins is to act quickly before our limited supplies disappear. See for yourself why these exquisite coins will be stand-outs in your collection!
