Why add this SSCA 1.21-1.30 g California Gold Rush Nugget to your collection?

Students of monetary and maritime history alike are sure to appreciate this gold nugget that was recovered from the wreckage of the SS Central America. The sinking of the ship was a contributor to the financial Panic of 1857, and the loss of life was considered unparalleled in American maritime history. The nugget itself came from the California Gold Rush and was being transported to the East Coast via Panama. The nugget will weigh between 1.21 and 1.30 g.

  • This nugget came from the California Gold Rush.
  • This nugget was recovered from the wreckage of the SS Central America.
  • The ship was carrying 10 short tons of gold from Colon, Panama to New York City when it sank on September 12, 1857.
  • Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this nugget is authentic.

A Human Tragedy

The SS Central America set sail from Panama on September 3, 1857. It stopped in Havana, Cuba on its way to New York City. On Sept. 9, the ship found herself caught in a Category 2 hurricane. While she survived the initial blow, the ship was severely damaged, and efforts to get the boiler functioning after it ceased doing so were in vain. Two ships were spotted on Sept. 12, and 153 passengers, mainly women and children, managed to get over to them in lifeboats. The ship sank that evening. An additional fifty people were rescued from the water, and three more were picked up in a lifeboat more than a week later. 425 people were not rescued. The remains of the ship were found on September 11, 1988, and an estimated $100-$150 million in gold was recovered.
