Why order this Antiqued Silver Smithsonian Russian Beard Token?
During his reign in the late 17th and early 18th century, Peter the Great sought to modernize Russia, including making it more Western. To that end, he imposed a tax on beards. Men willing to pay the tax could continue to wear them by paying the tax, which varied according to the individual's status. Those who paid the tax were given a token to indicate that they had paid the tax. The Smithsonian owns some of the few remaining original tokens, and they authorized this MCM exclusive issue, which replicates them. This piece was struck from 10 g of .999 fine silver, making it larger than the original tokens. The Shire Post Mint, which specializes in striking antiqued finished coins, struck these tokens. Like the original, this medal was broadstruck, which means that it lacks a "collar," which most modern coins bear.
Historic Bearded Face Design
With one major exception, the design elements of this medal mirrors those of the original. The focal point on the obverse is a portion of a bearded face, which is shown from the nose down. Above it is a Cyrillic inscription that translates to "Money taken," meaning that the man had paid the tax. A leafy wreath on the rim encircles both the design and the inscription.
At the top of the reverse is a Russian Imperial Eagle. It stands above another Cyrillic inscription that means "Year 2019." On the original tokens, counterstamps indicating that the tax had been paid for multiple years would be included below. On this reproduction, the Smithsonian Sun takes the place of such counterstamps.
Striking GEM BU with Exclusive Smithsonian Label
This medal has a sharp strike, strong eye appeal, and lacks any signs of wear, which is why the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified it GEM Brilliant Uncirculated. That certification is provided on a label that features the Smithsonian's sun logo.
