U.S. Mint

The United States declared independence in 1776, but it wasn’t until 1792 that the U.S. Mint was formed. The first U.S Coins to be struck came off the dies in 1793. Some of the earliest presses used by the Mint were actually powered by horses. Steam powered equipment wasn’t available until later. Production was slow and quite limited by the technology of the era. This is in stark contrast to the U.S. Mint as we know it today.

Now that the U.S. Mint has been striking coins for over 225 years, it’s a massive operation with facilities across the nation. While other U.S. Mint facilities have come and gone over the years, the current branches include Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point.

With the help of modern technology and a large staff, the U.S. Mint now produces billions of coins each year. The majority of these coins are intended for circulation, but collectible coins still make up a fair portion of their overall production.

The U.S. Mint is a top choice whether you’re looking for collectible coins or bullion. Their coins are consistently very high quality and a number of appealing designs are released each year. U.S. Mint products that are still in their original packaging are always classy. If quality is your main concern, it’s hard to go wrong with coins from the U.S. Mint

U.S. Mint Coins

Originally, a number of circulating U.S. coins contained precious metals. Production of circulating gold coins ended after 1932. 1964 was the final year for circulating silver coins. However, the U.S. Mint offers a variety of bullion coins today in addition to the clad coins that we see in circulation.

American Eagle Series

Among the U.S. Mint’s most popular bullion coins are the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle. These coins were introduced in 1986. The weight and purity of each one are guaranteed by the U.S. Mint. The American Silver Eagle is made of .999 fine silver while the American Gold Eagle is made of 22 karat gold. The American Silver Eagle is only offered in the 1 oz. size, but American Gold Eagles are offered in 1 oz., ½ oz., ¼ oz., and 1/10 oz. sizes.

The American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle are bullion coins, but they are very popular with collectors and the U.S. Mint makes an effort to accommodate this as much as possible. For example, both gold and silver American Eagles are also available with either a proof finish or a brilliant uncirculated finish. For the 20th anniversary of the series, the U.S. Mint surprised everyone with the introduction of additional finishes such as burnished and reverse proof.

Other Bullion Coins

The U.S. Mint offers enough bullion coins that there are options for everyone. In addition to the American Gold Eagle and the American Silver Eagle, there is also the 24 karat American Gold Buffalo, the American Platinum Eagle, and the American Palladium Eagle. Fractional sizes of the American Gold Buffalo and the American Platinum Eagle have been struck, but they have not been offered in recent years. The American Palladium Eagle is still quite new to the U.S. Mint’s lineup. These are the only palladium U.S. coins that have been struck so far.

The 5 oz. America the Beautiful quarters are made of .999 fine silver, which makes them an appealing choice for both collectors and stackers. These are some of the most unique coins that have been introduced by the U.S. Mint in recent years. They feature the same designs that can be found on circulating America the Beautiful quarters, but they have a diameter of 3”. Their massive size makes all the fine details so much easier to appreciate.

U.S. Mint Quality

As mentioned above, the weight and purity of U.S. Mint bullion coins are guaranteed. In recent years they have made an active effort to get designs from a wider variety of artists. The most notable example of this may be the American Liberty coins and medals.

The quality of U.S. coins is very consistent. The U.S. Mint actively checks in with major third-party grading services. This is done as an additional quality control measure.

Coins that are still in original Mint packaging have a great presentation. The packaging that the U.S. Mint chooses is classy and high quality.
