Why buy this 5 Cent 1930's Shoot for the Moon Punchboard?

Punchboards originated as a form of gambling in the 1700's. Tavern owners made their own boards by drilling holes into wood and putting game pieces or paper tickets into each hole. They covered the holes with foil or paper, and patrons could buy chances to puncture a hole's paper with a nail to retrieve its contents. The one with the winning number meant that the patron won a prize. Use of the boards declined in the 1800's when operators of the boards began to cheat, which was possible because they knew where the big prizes were.

  • A new type of punchboard made its debut in the late 1800's. This type involved putting paper in both the front and back of the hole so that operators could not cheat. Punchboards became popular advertising pieces at drug stores. Use eventually declined after World War II, when people began viewing gambling in a more negative light.
