Why purchase this ancient Silver Drachm of Seleucid King Antiochos III?
The Seleucid Empire was founded in 312 B.C. by Seleucus I Nicator, encompassing a region of what was once a part of Alexander the Great's vast Macedonian Empire. Antiochos III (the Great) was the sixth ruler of the Seleucid Empire, for a period of thirty-six years from 223-187 B.C. Taking the throne at the age of eighteen, Antiochos inherited a disorganized state, with Asia Minor and the easternmost provinces detached. Self-declared "Basileus Megas," Greek for "Great King," Antiochos spent much of his reign as an active military ruler, and is responsible for seeing the restoration of the majority of the Empire in his time.
