Why add this Seleucid Kingdom of Demetrius III Silver Tetradrachm to your collection?

Seleucus was one of Alexander the Great's most competent generals and defeated his rivals for Alexander's near eastern territories after his death. Once king, he founded the city of Kingdom of Seleucia, a dynastic empire that remained in existence from 312-63 BC. The Tetradrachm was the coin of the realm for more than 200 years. This coin was minted in the name of the 24th Seleucid Emperor, Demetrius III, at the Damascus Mint.

Seleucid Image of a Goddess

The diademed profile image of Demetrius III appears on the obverse, facing right, with a thin beard along his jaw line. The reverse features the Syrian Goddess Artemis Atargatis surrounded by a laurel wreath, date in exergue. She is depicted with a barley stalk rising from each shoulder, veiled and wrapped in the body of a fish, and holding a flower. Atargatis is the life-giving divinity, a protector of animals and humans, associated with springs and rivers. The Greek text represents: "King Demetrius, God, Father-loving, and Savior."
