Why purchase this Una and the Lion 1 oz. silver bullion bar?
The 1839 Una and the Lion five pound coin of Queen Victoria is one of the most celebrated coinage designs in the history of The Royal Mint, and is a fitting subject for the inaugural release of the Mint's Great Engravers Collection of bullion bars. Inspired by the 1590 epic poem "The Faerie Queene" by Edmund Spenser, the Una and the Lion coin design is considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of William Wyon, the Mint's Chief Engraver from 1828-1851.
- This non-denominated Una and the Lion bullion bar is struck from 1 Troy oz. of .9999 fine silver.
- The bar measures 49.96 x 28.98 mm.
- Mintage is limited to 35,000 pieces.
Contemporary Interpretation of the Una and the Lion
Obverse: The obverse features an all-over pattern of curls and spirals, with the bar's weight and purity, "1 OZ 999.9 FINE SILVER," located prominently at the center. Above, the Mint's unique crown and shield crest appears to the left of the inscription "THE ROYAL MINT."
Reverse: The Princess Una is portrayed as a confident young woman on the reverse grasping the orb and scepter of the monarch, with her loyal lion companion standing protectively at her side. The pair stands with their eyes focused upon the future, as a breeze symbolically propels them towards it. The background pattern mimics the delicate spiral design on the obverse. The powerful design was created by Jody Clark, the Royal Mint sculptor responsible for the imagery of the popular Queen's Beasts series.
