Why purchase this Roman Republic Silver Denarius?

This Silver Denarius was struck in honor of Consuls of the Roman Republic, L. Cornelius Lentulus and C. Claudius Marcellus. The government of the Roman Republic was structured so that two consuls were elected to serve a one year term together in the highest elected political office. Struck c. 49 BC, this 3.95 gram silver denarius was issued by moneyer Cn. Nerius.

Gorgeous Detailed Imagery

The obverse depicts the right facing profile image of Saturn, the Roman god of agriculture, with a harpa (a tool similar to a sickle) resting on his shoulder. The moneyer's name curves on the right "NERI-Q-VRB".

Featured on the reverse is a legionary eagle, also known as an aquila, between two infantry standards. One is inscribed "H" for the Hastati, the other inscribed "P" representing the Principes. In the armies of the Roman Republic, soldiers purchased their own armor and were arranged by their social class. The Hastati were commoners who could afford only light, cheap armor. Principes were wealthy young men who could afford heavier, higher quality garb. The classic arrangement of a legion in the time of the Roman Republic was to place the more expendable Hastati at the front, to be reinforced by the Principes.
