Why purchase a Silver Denarius struck during the years of the ancient Roman Republic?

First issued in 211 B.C., the Roman Silver Denarius was one of the most extensively circulated coins of the ancient world, struck in the Roman Republic and Empire for nearly four and a half centuries. During the years of the Republic, the Denarius was struck from .950-.980 fine silver with a weight of 3.9-4.55 g. The weight remained consistent until 64 A.D., when the coin was reduced in both weight and purity under the sanction of Emperor Nero.

Roman Republic Silver Denarius imagery

The earliest design of the Denarius of the Roman Republic featured the patron deity of the city and region. The female personification of Rome, Roma, is depicted on the obverse, wearing a Corinthian helmet. The reverse often featured a chariot driven by a figure of Roman mythology. Reverse imagery eventually evolved into representations of importance to the issuing moneyer. The design typically features the inscription "ROMA," with later issues including the name of the moneyer as well.
