Why add this Silver Denarius of Julius Caesar to your collection of ancient coins?

Struck c. 48-46 B.C., the bold imagery of this coin depicting the wreathed image of Venus Genetrix is meant to represent Julius Caesar's confidence of his divine ancestry and irrefutable right to be reappointed dictator for the second time. Caesar claims Venus, goddess of motherhood and domesticity, to be an ancestor in his direct lineage, and thus the divine matriarch of all of the Roman people.

Gorgeous imagery from Roman mythology

The obverse features the crowned portrait of Venus facing right. In Roman mythology, she was the mother of the Roman people through her son Aeneas. The reverse portrays Aeneas during his journey to Rome after the fall of Troy, while carrying Palladium (statue of the Greek goddess Pallas Athena, protector of Troy) in his right hand, with Anchises perched upon his left shoulder. Inscribed "CAESAR."
