Marcus Aurelius Septimius Bassianus Antoninus was the eldest son of Septimus Severus and emperor of the Roman Empire as Caracalla from AD 198-217. Caracalla is responsible for the large public bath house constructed in Rome AD 121-217. Remaining in operation until approximately AD 530, the ruins of Baths of Caracalla are a popular modern tourist attraction. This Silver Denarius was struck for Caracalla in Rome, AD 189-217, and was recently discovered in Seven Hills Region of Rome among a hoard of 7,000 silver denarii.

Symbolic Roman Imperial Imagery

The obverse depicts the right facing laureate image of Emperor Caracalla, accompanied by his inscribed name and title.

Reverse imagery of the denarii of Caracalla vary, depicting the emperor proclaiming a military victory, or goddesses such as Fides, Felicitas and Spes, conveying messages of trust, happiness and hope within the empire.

Graded Choice Extremely Fine

NGC Ancients, the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation's ancient coin specialists, graded this Silver Denarius of the Roman Emperor Caracalla to be Ch XF, Choice Extremely Fine. Similar to a coin graded 45 on the Sheldon Scale, the coin exhibits complete details with a few of the highest design elements flattened with wear. The coin is sealed in an NGC protective holder with certification label and presented in a Story Vault, which is a clear display case holding the coin and a colorful story card describing the life, reign and impact of Emperor Caracalla.
