Why purchase this Billon Nummus of Roman Emperor Galerius?

Galerius was Roman Emperor from A.D. 305-311, co-ruling with a series of Emperors that included Constantius, Severus, Constantine and Licinius. Although it is historically noted that Galerius opposed Christianity, he issued an edict of toleration in A.D. 311 which abolished the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians, which had severely limited the rights of Christians in the Empire. This ancient Roman Nummus was struck at the Cyzicus Mint (modern day Turkey) from billon, a bronze base lightly coated with silver, during the reign of Emperor Galerius.

Extraordinary symbolic imagery

The obverse features a laureate, bearded, right-facing image of Emperor Galerius, framed by a beaded border and the legend "GAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG" (Galerius Maximianus Pious, Happy Emperor).

Genius is depicted on the reverse, standing left, with a chlamys draped over his left shoulder and a modius on his head, cradling a cornucopia in his left arm, right hand holding patera from which a liquid pours. Inscribed "GENIO IMPERATORIS," meaning "Genius of the Commander," referencing the Emperor as protector of the entirety of the Roman Empire.

Extremely Fine Billon Nummus
