Why Make This Bronze Sestertius of Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius the Next Addition to Your Collection?

While many collectors are familiar with the denarius, there were fascinating coins of other denominations issued by the Roman Empire as well. The coin shown here is a bronze sestertius, which had one fourth the value of a silver denarius. This large sestertius is from the time of Antoninus Pius, approximately AD 138 to AD 161. He is remembered fondly in historical accounts as one of the "Good Emperors" of Rome.

Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius - Two Legendary Emperors for the Price of One!

A handsome portrait of Emperor Antoninus Pius is displayed on the obverse. He is facing the right in this design, encircled by inscriptions. This coin exhibits a handsome and choice dark green patina.

On the reverse, a young Marcus Aurelius is depicted as Caesar (essentially, "Vice President") under Pius. Marcus Aurelius was the adoptive son of Antoninus Pius, and was Caesar before became emperor in his own right beginning in AD 161. This coin is a scarcer type and depicts two legendary emperors on the same piece!
