Traditional Saint-Gaudens Design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens

Since the inception of the series, Gold Eagle coins have borne the design that gets its name from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who originally created the image for the obverse of the double eagle. Liberty stands at the center facing the holder. In her right hand, she holds her torch, a symbol of freedom. In her left, she extends an olive branch, a symbol of peace, to her side. The Capitol Dome, a symbol of American government, is in the lower left. The rays of the morning sunrise in the background. Along the rim are fifty stars, four more than appeared on the original design.

On the reverse is a family of eagles. The design was the work of Miley Busiek and consists of a male eagle bringing an olive branch back to his nest, where his mate nestles their young.
