Featuring Coert Steynberg's Beloved Springbok Antelope Design
The coins in this roll have Otto Schultz's left-side portrait of Paul Kruger on the obverse. Kruger was the South African Republic's third President. Although his legacy is extremely controversial, his status as one of the most important figures in the history of the issuing country is not. Here, he is shown with his long, thick beard. Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA."
South Africa's national animal, the springbok antelope, is the feature of Coert Steynberg's reverse design. The graceful creature is depiected darting across the plains. Steynberg shows its head turned to the right of the holder to offer a better look at its honrs and its face. The creature is so closely associated with South Africa that the country's national sports teams are commonly referred to as "the Springboks." The date, "2020," is split to the left and right of the animal. Arching over it is the name of the coin, "KRUGERRAND," and on the bottom portion of the rim are inscriptions of the coin's weight in Afrikaans and English, "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER," and face value, "R1."
