Patriotic Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
On the obverse is Adolph Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design. It debuted on the half dollar in 1916 and remained there until 1947 before returning for the Silver Eagle series in 1986. Liberty carries laurel and oak branches, symbols of civilian and military honors, respectively, while striding confidently toward the left side of this face. She extends her right hand over the rising sun. The figure is the picture of patriotism. She is draped in the American flag and dons a Phrygian cap, which identifies her as a freed slave. Her name, "LIBERTY," arches over the image, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is included on the right. There is no date at the bottom like there is on the Silver Eagle.
John Mercanti modeled his Silver Eagle design on the Great Seal of the United States, and the reverse of these rounds is modeled after that. At the center is a union shield. Unlike the one on the bullion coin, this one has the word "COPY" inscribed at the top of it. The shield is guarded by an eagle, which spreads its wings to its side. The eagle clutches an olive branch, a symbol of peace, and arrows, which represent America's willingness to defend her values, in its talons while holding a ribbon with the inscription "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. Above the bird's head are thirteen stars, one for each of the original states. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER."
