Obverse: The designs of these rounds were based off of the iconic Buffalo Nickel by James Earle Fraser. On the obverse is a right-side composite portrait of a Native American man. He has long, braided hair that falls down over his shoulder and feathers tied up at the back of his head. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed on the rim in front of him.

Reverse: The reverse bears a left-side profile of an American bison, a massive animal that is native to the American plains. Arching over the animal is an inscription of the round's weight, "ONE HALF TROY OUNCE." Below is an inscription of its purity, "999 FINE SILVER." "HM," the initials of Highland Mint, are in the lower left.
