Why purchase this roll of twenty 1776-1976 Clad Eisenhower Dollar coins?
The Eisenhower Dollar was one of three U.S. Mint circulating series to feature a single year issue 1976 design honoring the nation's 200th Anniversary. Aware of what a special release this was, a family purchased five Mint sealed bags of Bicentennial dollars (5,000 coins), keeping them safely stored and sealed for 43 years. Each bag was stamped by the Philadelphia Mint with the date 1975, indicating that the contents of the five bags of 1976 dated coins were produced a year earlier. This roll of Type 2, 1976 Clad Eisenhower Dollars hails from one of the Mint sealed bags.
Design of the Eisenhower Dollar
A portrait of Eisenhower is centered on the obverse, designed by U.S. Mint 10th Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro. Inscribed "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "1776-1976."
The Liberty Bell is illustrated on the reverse, partially overlapping the image of a full moon. Inscribed "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "ONE DOLLAR." This design, determined by national contest, features the winning submission of sculpture student Dennis R. Williams.
