Since its introduction in 1967, the Gold Krugerrand has featured a consistent, nationally themed design. The success of the series served as inspiration to national Mints across the globe, who began to launch their own gold bullion coinage in the late 1970s and 1980s. By 1987, the groundbreaking Gold Krugerrand had influenced series of gold coinage issued by Canada, China, the United States, Australia and Great Britain which are still produced today.
Iconic Design of the Gold KrugerrandObverse: Paul Kruger, the first South African president, is depicted on the obverse in a left facing pose. The issuing nation's identity curves around the portrait, inscribed in both Afrikaans and English as "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA." This classically styled presidential likeness represents a revival of the obverse design of the 1892 South African Gold Pond, the design of which is credited to acclaimed sculptor Otto Schultz. Reverse: The national animal of the Republic of South Africa, the springbok antelope, is illustrated on the reverse, gracefully leaping over an array of foliage indicative of the South African savanna. The distinctive image was originally created for the 1948 South African five shilling coin by renowned medallic sculptor Coert Steynberg. Inscriptions include "KRUGERRAND," "2022" and "FYNGOUD 1 OZ.
