The Krugerrand

Originally intended to be circulated in South Africa, the Krugerrand was developed in 1967 under the Afrikaner dominated government of the time. It is made from 91.67% pure gold, a preferred alternative to 24k solid gold as a circulating coin because gold is very soft, and the alloy mixture would hold up better to circulation wear.

Production of the Krugerrand was severely hampered by the sanctions against South Africa for their practice of Apartheid, a racially motivated minority rule that discriminated against the majority black population of the country. Since the end of Apartheid in 1994, the repeal of the sanctions on South Africa have helped the Krugerrand become one of the more purchased world gold bullion coins by collectors and investors worldwide.

Design of the Krugerrand

The obverse design of the Krugerrand consists of the Boer statesman Paul Kruger, who served four terms as South Africa’s president. The reverse design features the Springbok, one of South Africa's national symbols.
