Featuring the Unifying Design of George T. Morgan
Obverse: The obverse bears a novel Liberty design by George T. Morgan. Morgan broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure and instead used an American-style figure, Anna Willess Williams, as his model. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern one, wheat. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states, and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath. Just above the bird's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
