Description

Why add this Random Date Hungarian Madonna and Child Silver Denar to your collection?

The Madonna and Child silver Denar coin is one of the most revered coin designs of the Renaissance period, minted from the mid-15th to the early 17th centuries. The religious-themed coin was the first of its kind for Hungary. The coin is also notable as one of the first European coins to have a fully inscribed date. The silver Denar was hand struck by Magyar craftsmen in the mining town of Kremnica, a location that is in modern day central Slovakia, with a weight of 0.5-0.6g, and a diameter of 15-16mm.

Classic beauty of Madonna and Child

The Madonna is depicted facing forward, gently cradling the baby Jesus on the obverse. The border inscription reads “PATRONA VNGARIE,” which represents “the Patron Saint of Hungary.” Also included flanking the image are the letters “K” and “B,” the Kremnica Mint’s mark.

The four-part segmented shield of the Hungarian Royal Coat of Arms appears on the reverse, surrounded by the ruling monarch’s name, and date, if struck before 1570.
